Don't let the snakes fear deter a trip. You likely will never see a rattle snake and they don't like you anymore than you like them. Keep dogs on leash and watch where you step or put your hands. My rule of thumb is when the temps are 60F or above it is time to be alert to snakes, below about 60F they usually are not out. Watch the late evening as it is the time they like to stretch out and
get some sun. Most early cool mornings the snakes are not out.
Coyotes can be a huge issue but if your dog is on a leash it is almost a non issue. I walk our lab every day in the desert and we typically see about a dozen snakes a year, mostly Bull snakes that look like rattle snakes but are not poisonous. Don't cancel a trip because of the snake worry. Just take some precautions.
