I have lived out west with dogs for about 25 years. I get my dogs the rattlesnake vaccine each year. The vaccine gives you more time to get treatment if they are bitten. My dogs have never been bitten but I knew someone that left their dogs outside in a rural area that was bitten and died. It is possible but not a common occurrence. You can get ticks anywhere so we watch for them all the time. There are many wonderful places to visit and I would not let any of this stop you.
