We went to western Nebraska and Cheyenne, WY last year, and I was worried about the same thing, especially since there are signs about Rattlesnakes at Chimney Rock, which I wanted to visit. Well, we did visit the visitor center, and I did walk my sheltie - in the parking lot - and we didn't see one snake! We even had our photo taken with the rock and snake warning sign in the background. We walked on part of the Oregon Trail near Scottsbluff, and never encountered a snake. Just keep your dog on a leash, and be watchful where you walk. Stay on trails and heed the caution signs, as we did. We're from the Midwest and had the same worries, but all turned out well. Use common sense and you'll be fine. We'll soon be heading down to Florida for a week, and I'll be watchful for fire ants and alligators, but I know we'll be just fine. Enjoy the west - it's a special place and well worth seeing!
