Don't forget the dangers posed by plants, especially cholla cactus. Prickly pieces of cholla on the ground cause trouble for dogs and people alike.
My dog has picked up a few stickers. I always keep him leashed and within the trail but he's a curious little guy and wants to sniff everything. By and large, the desert is a good place for dogs and humans, IMHO.
