Don't forget the dangers posed by plants, especially cholla cactus. Prickly pieces of cholla on the ground cause trouble for dogs and people alike.
My dog has picked up a few stickers. I always keep him leashed and within the trail but he's a curious little guy and wants to sniff everything. By and large, the desert is a good place for dogs and humans, IMHO.
Carry a comb, the kind that has five or six long metal what-u-ma-call-it's, not the regular kind, to flick the Cholla off. Also carry a pliers, I carry a black Gerber micro mult-tool. Why black, cause it looks cool, and it matches Calvin's coat.
