Oh yikes!
I wonder if he came in contact with a "Hickory Tussock Moth" caterpillar? I've seen a few in our area lately - some folks (and online articles) will refer to it as "poisonous" - but it more like "highly allergenic" and will give humans who simply touch it, an itchy rash like Poison Ivy.
It's a fuzzy white caterpillar with a row of black dots running lengthwise down its back - the one I saw was about 2" long.
