Not all service dogs are obvious: our Stella Luna lived the first 4 years of her life in a cage owned by a breeder when we came across her. She had no training, for anything, whatsoever. My husband is severely disabled and even though Ms. Stella sticks to me like glue, she is very sensitive to the needs of my DH, to the point where she alerts me to any problems he may be having.
Several months ago while visiting friends, DH wanted to take Ms. Stella for a walk so he snapped on her collar and started shuffling to a back door. All of a sudden I heard Stella 'screaming', threw open the back door to find her resisting all attempts on my DH part to pull her down the steepest stairs you could imagine; he was only 1 step down but would have surely crashed and burned if she had let him continue! When we go shopping DH waits in the truck for me and I witnessed her 'leading' him back to the truck as he, obviously, had forgotten where we were parked and was trying to head in the wrong direction. Another time, just 2 days ago, while working in the computer room in the early A.M., she came to me and tried to pull me away with her to the bedroom. Naturally, I got up to see what was going on, only to discover my DH breathing erratically: I grabbed his big toe, wiggled it back and forth, and he began breathing normally once again.
There are many more instances where she 'saved' him from serious injury or harm and so I wonder how in the world this poor baby, who had no personality when we got her almost a year ago, knew how to be a service dog? Do we abuse the privilege of her capabilities? Do we claim she is a 'service dog' and buy her a jacket proclaiming her status? NO, we just love her and consider her a blessing because she truly is a guardian angel!
