Back in 2004 we had a beautiful black lab named Sofie. She had to have TPLO surgery on her hind leg.
We had to go to Florida to assist my Dad and we had to take Sofie with us, she was still on restrictions and I didn't dare kennel her.
We stopped at rest areas on the way down for her potty breaks. She had one of those assist wraps with a handle on top so we could help her up stairs and such.
No where on it did it say "service animal" but when we walked her so many people came up to us and ask if they could pet her.
Well she was such a friendly dog that we always said yes, one guy brought his little girl over, she was maybe three or four and when they were all done loving on Sofie the Dad said "thank you for letting us pet your service dog, she's really sweet"
Huh...people just assumed and not one person ever asked but what shock when we said look, she's just our pet, she had surgery and we have to help her a bit.
I felt funny about it because people were comfortable with her and letting their little kids go hugging our dog...thankfully Sofie was a very gentle soul.
