For those that use muzzles

Just saw a DVM being interviewed on TV...she had been called out to see a dog who had collapsed on the street. The owner had put on a muzzle on the dog which was too tight and did not allow the dog to pant, the dog overheated , collapsed and subsequently died. Something to remember in this very hot weather . Very sad situation

  • like Dr Doug the DVM said that if a muzzle is needed, to use the basket type and make sure the fit was proper...but she also stressed that common sense should dictate when a dog should be walked, and in the heat of the day is not the time to do it ....and to carry water with you and if the dog is showing stress, put them in a shady area, pour some of the cool water on the head and the pads of their feet and if the dog is alert, allow them to drink on their own...it really is such a sad situation and totally preventable...I would never be able to forgive myself if it was me....
  • It doesn't have to be hot weather to be a problem, though that certainly exacerbates the danger. Panting is the primary cooling method for dogs.

Basket muzzles reduce the risk, but still limits drinking liquids.

    Good reminder.
