Goodbye Kaiya

This was a picture I posted back in August. Today we lost Kaiya. She suddenly (the last 2 days) became lethargic and lost appetite (real unusual for her). She showed symptoms this morning that we suspected were more serious.

I took her to the hospital, X-Rays and ultrasound showed fluid in the abdomen. We decided to do an exploratory laparotomy. I found at least a liter of blood and a ruptured tumor in her spleen. I did a splenectomy. She had metastatic tumors in her liver. We decided to give her any time she might have left, but she decided that this was the end and died post-op. Goldens and hemangiosarcomas are a terrible association. She was 8 1/2 and we were blessed with her love for 3 1/2 years.

We're shocked and devastated, but we've been through this and will survive.

  • My condolences on your loss. Dogs are so good at forming emotional bonds with humans, very painful when they are lost.
  • I am so sorry. It is so unfair that these wonderful Goldens have been cursed with the propensity for cancer. Our dogs teach us so much in life, but in death they teach us how to say good bye, grieve, and love again. I hope your journey on that path comforts you.
