After spending nearly $17,000 (eight surgeries including amputation and a total hip replacement) on Murphy after he was hit by a car, you can be sure that the first thing we did when we got Ollie was to buy pet insurance.
We do not have insurance. I occasionally run the numbers to see if it makes sense.
This bronze plan ($10K annual max coverage) with a $200 deductible and 100% reimbursement would cost us $716 annually for a 1.5 year old Border Collie before anything would be covered. We rarely have that much vet expense on one dog. When we do have that high of a bill (emergency C-section, snake bite, Addison's diagnosis, broken toe, etc) we won't know ahead of time which dog would need the coverage. This would mean we'd spend ca $4,000 to cover all of our dogs annually just incase one needed >$200 in vet care during a year. It would make more sense for us to put that $4,000 in savings for vet bills and replenish as needed.
