Back in the day when I was working nights(graveyard) we had our first Collie, Laddie. We saved him from the pound and he had a good life but we knew years later, kidney failure and other issues were causing his days to be numbered. We knew what had to be done but of course we didn't want to make that decision. I was scheduled to work one night and that day, we made our arrangements with the Vet for the following day. I called work and said I had to take a night off, my "Pal" was to be put down the following morning. I slept on the floor with Laddie all night only to find in the early AM, he had passed peacefully while we laid together. The wife and I sobbed until our Vet opened and we could have our Boy cremated. Still remember this like it was yesterday(25 years ago).
PS....just a quick anecdote regarding Laddie....my wife told me that each night I left for work, Laddie would jump up in bed exactly where I had been and lay his head right on my pillow.....it was if he was keeping the bed warm.
