I agree it sure looks like Canis Domesticus. Also I agree that it will probably have to be put down considering this attack. It has been reported that originally this was a stray cat that the boy adopted. If true, this is a very good case of a cat being grateful, which in my experience is quite rare.
I have this bizarre effect on cats, dogs, and children with which I am afflicted. I go into a house for the very first time, and one of the three aforementioned will suddenly decide that I am now their new favorite toy. Even cats will suddenly jump into my lap and take up residence. The folks will opine that they never saw that happen before.
