horses

Any folks bring the horses along? My wife and have found a good many places that cater to horses and owners. We would like to bring them along
  • Another yell out for Fort Robinson SP near Crawford, NE. We live 3 miles from there. They have parking for RVs at 3 different areas but only one has full hook-ups, the others just power. They have many equestrian events but the for the trail rider, they have great areas to go ride.
  • Ohio has quite a few State Parks that have horse camps. Hocking Hills in southern Ohio, Barcamp off I-70 just west of the W. Va. border, Malabar Farms Southeast of Mansfield ( where Lauren Becall and Humphrey Bogart got married). Not sure about Salt Fork. Van Buren State Park has a nice horse camp. (locate off I-75 between N. Baltimore and Findlay) God Luck and Happy Camping.
  • Winding River RV Resort, Grand Lake CO has horse camping sites and lots of adjacent riding trails.
  • I've seen quite a few "horse camps" in National Forests here in the Pacific Northwest. Most are dry-camping only, of course, but do usually have water (at least for the horses).

Washington State Parks partnering with local horsefolks recently opened a State Park near Cle Elum that's dedicated to horses. Drove through last time I was over there and though still looking a little raw, it's got all the facilities one could hope for if traveling with horses. I think there are twenty or so hookup sites, free drycampng, and I saw a pretty nice shower house that one doesn't even need coins to use.
    More info here.
  • There are several state parks and recreation areas in Indiana that have horsemen campgrounds, Potato Creek (near South Bend), Brown County (southern IN) among several others.

  • During one of our trips through GA we stayed at a state park that had horse camping sites and stables: Hard Labor Creek State Park

It was about an hour's drive east of Atlanta. Pretty nice cg but can't evaluate their horse accommodations as we have no horses.

If you ask about horse camping in the Parks and Campgrounds thread category you might get a number suggestions for cgs.
  • I think that is correct, many of the national and state parks that we have been to west and south, like Land Between Lakes, Sequoia NP, etc, had specific campgrounds with horse facilities like corrals, troughs and access to trails. There are a few in the Midwest, like Governor Dodge State park, but nowhere near as many.

Of course, one needs to have up to date coggins, and horses should be current on wormers and vaccines, such as west nile virus.

I've never horse camped, and no longer own a horse, but I always wanted to.
  • Fort Robinson SP in NE has a separate campground loop next to the stables just for people who bring horses.

I've only been to one campground that caters to horses, Artillery Ridge campground in Gettysburg, PA. Then again, I'm not looking for that type of campground. Are horse campgrounds more common out west / down south?
