I am so sorry about Maggie. I do think that bad pain you can't do anything about is a good time to stop.
I had a cat who lived for years and years with kidney disease. She would have crises, and then the vet would tweak her meds and she would be improved for a few months until the next crisis. It was so hard to know when to stop. I finally did when in addition to pain and feeling generally sick, she developed constant nausea that no meds could help. That seemed pretty miserable to me.
But, in retrospect, I think I maybe let her go on for too long before that. She was just so sweet, and I was going through a rough time myself, and I think I was selfish. She loved to cuddle and watch birds and stuff, but she was also ready to go.
