One of our dogs at 6 years old developed diabetes. She went blind and due to the stress all of her fur fell off. I had to give her insulin injections each day. Even with all of these issues she still had lots of life and gave us lots of love.
It was amazing to watch her. She knew the patio and backyard. Knew where the water and food were. She even played around with our other dog.
She would go camping with us and she would learn the campsite. I always kept her on a chain in the campsite so she couldn't get too far and get lost. She seemed to enjoy the sounds, smell and feel of being outdoors.
When I would take both for a walk I had a short chain I would attach her to the other dog and they would walk together side by side. She had her own guide dog.
I knew it was time when one morning she could no longer stand on her own. The vet said her organs were beginning to shut down. So we said goodbye to her.
The other dog lasted a few years longer (she was older) and at 16 she also was having trouble with her hind legs and couldn't stand. So we said goodbye to her.
As others have indicated you will know...quality of life is the key.
