As for not using the box, if he hasn't eaten, maybe he just doesn't have to go. Or maybe he went when you weren't looking?
If you only have one cat, that last part should be easy to figure out. We have 3 (used to be 4), so when one was having an issue it is(was) very hard to figure out...had to stalk the cat! lol
