Difficult question no matter how well you know your cat. WHENEVER and WHATEVER decision you make--NEVER look back and think "what if". You will drive yourself crazy and it will always be in the back of your mind that you should have done it later/sooner.
If you trust your vet completely, as I do, sometimes if you ask "If it were your cat, what would you do?"--they can give the best answer...assuming you take your cat often and he/she knows him well.
I've made the decision many times with many dogs. Some people say "you will know" or "they will let you know by the look in their eyes"---not necessarily true.
If he is not in pain---that's definitely a plus to not make the decision. One of my dogs was an exception to that rule. He had the dog's version of Lou Gehrig's Disease. He had a cart (dog wheelchair) after he lost the use of his back legs--I told myself when it reached his front legs it would be time. I worked and couldn't be with him full time to care for him and honestly, I didn't think it was fair to him to live life like that. That was the hardest decision--there was no pain with it.
Good luck with your decision---and please, again....don't look back after you make the decision.
