He purrs when I sit with him and pet him, doesn't seem to hurt anywhere, just lethargic.

I'd give him a bit of time, too? And my attitude, at this late point in his life, is that any food he'll eat is good. I made my dog scrambled eggs and oatmeal for breakfast every morning (and then dog food with ample doses of people-food mixed in for dinner), just trying to get some extra calories in him. I DON'T EVEN COOK BREAKFAST FOR ED AND MYSELF.....LOL!
