Either he's not licking it clean when finishing his food or he's dropping dirt into his food bowl; either way it sounds like he's making a statement about your choice of food for him.
Calvin may have nasty, thick, slimy spit like my boxer does that coats the bottom and sides of the bowl - turns to concrete if not rinsed/washed immediately after eating - totally GROSS!!! :E
Calvin leaves a film on the bowl. Which if I don't clean it right away. I'll soak the bowl for a while, then wash it, to make it easier to clean.
