I haven't read through all the pages of posts on this subject, so apologize if I'm repeating someone else.... I have never been a fan of letting strange dogs go nose to nose with my dogs. I have cockers, and they are social, well adjusted dogs.
I will never understand people who think they have to let their dog go nose to nose with strange dogs on a walk. They don't know my dogs' temperaments and I don't know theirs. They don't know my dogs' health and vaccination status.... and I don't know theirs. With the new strains of dog flu and such going around, it just makes me even more nervous about chance encounters. I don't see how anyone who really cares about their dog would even want to subject them to an "in your face" meeting, not knowing anything about my dogs. My dogs are fine, but THEY don't know that.
Our dogs don't need new friends every time they go for a walk out in public.
Another pet peeve of mine, is parents who let their kids run wild, especially in a vet's office. The kids are not taught to respect the animals. I can't believe the number of times I've had kids run up to my dogs and poke at them or reach at them, while waiting for the vet. Again, you don't know the temperament or health status of my dogs, so if you are going to be responsible, keep your kids and dogs away from my dogs.
There are some vicious dogs out there, and there are well adjusted dogs out there. There are irresponsible, stupid owners out there, and there are responsible, dog savvy owners out there. To me, approaching a stranger with a strange dog going face to face is akin to playing russian roulette. You don't know what is on either end of that leash.
