I don't think a direct reference is necessary to make the logical leap. If the species of wolves that our dogs descended from is extinct, and if the wolves we know today ("modern" wolves) are NOT our dogs' direct ancestors . . . then why would one ever assume their diets should be related? Why should dogs' diets be related to a species that they have nothing in common with genetically?
