I sometimes wonder if many dog bites for "gentle" breeds go unreported. While I agree that a rottie or pitbull may do more damage than a collie or Golden retriever, I often wonder what the REAL stats are. Add a hysteria-inducing media and stats get skewed.
I can't imagine that a dog bite-from ANY breed- would go unreported. Surly everyone knows how dangerous a bite from any animal is. I agree a bite from a pit bull may get more attention, but I seriously doubt someone wouldn't report a bite because it was from a gentle breed.
Many insurance companies won't insure you, or may charge you extra for liability insurance if you own certain breeds. They do not base rates on media hype, they are carefully based on statistics.
Look, I know some love their pit bulls and other perceived dangerous breeds and never have a problem with them. However, there is no place for them in a campground. Why should someone pay for a camp site to feel threatened? That goes for the yappy ones too (maybe even more so, in my opinion).
As far as the media goes, MANY bites do go unreported, if the breed is not what the media wants to hear about, which is to say, a pit bull.
Also, dog breeds are frequently mis-identified and dogs that aren't a "dangerous breed" are often identified as such.
