About a month ago on the street behind us a couple was walking their shih tzu and their neighbor's pit bull supposedly trained not to leave the yard attacked their dog. The shih tzu was in intensive care for about 2 weeks. Six months ago my friend's sweet little Yorkie was attacked by 2 boxers. That was surgery on the neck with a 3 month recovery. What happened her dog slipped out of the collar and ran up to the two dogs and they attacked. She didn't hold anything against the boxers. An acquaintance of ours had his minpin in a dog park inside his complex and a pit-bull climbed the fence and attacked his dog. It was pretty serious, but the dog recovered. My parent's neighbor lost his Yorkie to a pitbull. What happened his dog slipped out of the gate and went into another yard.
So, the first example, the pit bull escaped from its confinement and a fight between it and a yorkie occurred. The second example, the yorkie escaped from its confinement and a fight between it and two dogs occurred. The third example, the yorkie escaped from its confinement and a fight between it and a pit bull occurred.
The pit bull #1 is at fault. The 2 boxers got a reprieve. The pit bull #2 is at fault.
Yet, the yorkie #3 did exactly what the pit bull #1 did - escaped its yard. In addition, the yorkie #3 went into pit bull #2's territory, not just out into the street.
Sounds like there is a bias going on that excuses small dogs for doing exactly what big dogs get blamed for.
