Mystery solved
I would have to change the Collies water two to three times a day because of dirt and grass. My new Collie Cooper was taking his paw and raking the top of the water before he took a drink.

Had a German Shepherd that had to have a leg in his water bucket when drinking. No paw problem; he would change legs while drinking. We had to use a galvanized small wash tub because he would tip over anything smaller. He would also drop his chew toy in the bucket to hide it from the other dog. It was fun watching him get it back out. He would lay his ears back and squint his eyes, then plunge his head in the bucket and come up with the toy. Needles to say his water bucket was on one end the concrete patio, and the dog door into the family room was 30 feet away on the other end of the patio.
