They are if used improperly or a cheap collar that does not adjust down enough. The idea is not to "shock" the dog, but to give him an unpleasant sensation that is associated with a certain behavior. The dog should only receive a slight tingle. If you put your fingers on the probes, you would be surprised how slight it really is. - xteacherExplorerWe got one at WalMart. It should work on a small dog - about $40.
- Pawz4meExplorerTritronics or Dogtra.
- doxiemom11Explorer IIThere must be some other alternative. Shock collars seem so cruel.
- Sundance07ExplorerWe have a spray collarthat we have used on various barkers over the years. It has a remote control with 3 settings.
1) Beep 2) short spray 3) long spray
It squirts a citronnella spray that is quite effective. IMHO more pet friendly than a shock collar. - I_am_still_waynExplorerhttp://tritronics.factoryoutletstore.com/cat/19948/Tritronics-Bark-Limiters.html
This company was one of the pioneers of electronic dog training equipment. They are professional and offer exemplary customer service. They can instruct you and the best training techniques to train the dog to alter its behavior without administering harsh strategies. - iawoody2ExplorerWe have one from Pet Smart, it has a intensitive setting so as not to get too much shock based on dog size. It also has a high pitch sound that will warned the dog. Ours was only shocked once and now we use the high pitch and he knows what will happened after that. Works good for us.
- dennisgt60ExplorerWe tried a bark collar on our yappy Pug. In our experience, the collar had to fit very snug and the poor dog yelped repeatedly when shocked. It was an awful affair that seemed too cruel to the dog for me. We quickly gave up on the collar idea. Dog is still yappy. I hope it works better for you. Good luck.
