We have travelled extensively with our two dogs. I am not a fan of pens even though a lot of folks use them for their smaller dogs. When we sit outside my big dog is on his leash laying beside me. The smaller one is either in my wife's lap or lying beside her on a leash also.
My problem with pens is like other poster's have stated---I cannot tell you how many times a large dog with a too small child holding his leash has pulled them towards us. We have had one or two dogs not on a leash run over as well. Just my opinion dogs should never be left outside on a tie down or in a pen without you being right there.
