That's NOT what CNN sort of implied a little while ago - they hinted that the tainted wheat gluten *could* have been used in human food, also?? That at the moment, nobody knows for sure....

FDA Testing Reveals Chemical in Pet Food

WASHINGTON Mar 30, 2007 (AP)— Recalled pet foods contained a chemical used to make plastics, but government tests failed to confirm the presence of rat poison, federal officials said Friday.

The Food and Drug Administration said it found melamine in samples of the Menu Foods pet food, as well as in wheat gluten used as an ingredient. Cornell University scientists also have found the chemical, sometimes used as a fertilizer, in the urine of sick cats, as well as in the kidney of one cat that died after eating the company's wet food.

The apparently melamine-contaminated wheat gluten also was shipped to an unnamed company that manufactures dry pet food. The FDA is attempting to determine if that product, imported from China, was used to make any pet food, Sundlof said. There is no risk to human food, he told reporters.

I also have faith in CBC's reporting. I quote it often, and provided a link to one of their reports on this thread.

The CBC stated, "U.S. Food and Drug Administration investigates pet food safety scares". Yes, the FDA investigates pet food safety scares. It does not regulate ingredients.

Our Winnie eats Royal Canin Limited Ingredient Diet (Duck and potato) which is bought from our vet, but I'm worried about the fact that no one is regulating the pet food industry. Maybe we'll go to homemade dog food now.

They give me the willies, too, because high temperatures don't seem to kill it. But your "organic" grazing isn't preventing your animals from being exposed - the disease is caused by a thing called a "prion" - it's not a bacteria or a virus. Deer get a similar prion-based disease called Chronic Wasting Disease (and the Human form is called Kreutzfeld-Jacob Disease)......and I'm not sure if they can share that with your grazers or not....but it's something to be aware of.

Basically, the prions eat holes in the brains of their victims. NOT a nice way to die.

If you remember the BSE outbreak in UK? They burned the carcasses with diesel fuel and then buried them in a lime filled pit. Neither the diesel fuel nor the lime destroys the prions. Only incineration in a kiln at 1400F will destroy it and the vets knew it. Pity the poor farmers whose ground water supplies will now be contaminated when these pits leach.

Actually I'm very aware of this. Most were from Rocky Mountain Sheep whose bones layed fallow upon the ground for nearly a hundred years. Deer and other critters ate of the bones for the calcium. If you research it deep enough you'll find CSU (read APHIS) had it contained to a small area above Ft. Collins, CO to and thru the North Platte River Valley (Wyoming). But, for some reason the captured deer were released - the disease began it's spread. Fortunately, we keep a close eye on our grazers and there have never been these ancient sheep grazing within 150 miles of us.
