Pet ID tags, What info to put on it?

Years ago a dog followed me home. We contacted the owner because his telephone number was on the tag.

We put his name and both our cell phone numbers on a stainless steel "dog tag". That way when we are looking for him, someone can immediately get ahold of us.

we were dry camping out in the desert and someone a few camps away set off fireworks. It frightened a friend's dog and she broke the leash and took off into the desert night. The owners have a mentally challenged son, who this dog was his world. We searched for days for her. Her "parents" stayed for several days after we all went home (back to work). She was found in a town, near the post office about 7 miles from where we were camped, 30+ days later - she had to cross a major freeway to get there. Luckily for her, she still had her tags with her "parents" cell phone number on it. The wonderful woman who found her, called the cell number and the parents went and picked her up right away. This was the best Christmas present ever!!

Our local news showed his picture on TV and told the story - it's like the entirety of the area was searching for "Puckett", who's now reunited with his frantic owners.

I have my cell number on his tag so if he gets lost when he is with me on the road I can still be reached... Also have "reward" in big letters under the phone number so if someone finds him, they will be less likely to keep him and give them a reason to call the number...

Before the advent of RFID chips for identification, the tattoo was the only means of affixing a permanent id. With the new technology, they are about useless.

About the only use now if for easier identification when an animal has been spayed.

Oh - I agree about tattoos being useless for a lost dog. I think their purpose is more along the lines of preventing fraud; or being stolen.

Ike had a tattoo - although it was just letters and numbers. It was on his tummy - so it WAS visible. He was destined for greatness in the show ring when he was born (from a long line of Champions), it seems; and "valuable dogs" need tattoos.
