All cats do this, especially when they are stalking. He may be daydreaming now, but he is still occupied, his mind alert.
I don't 'own' cats now, but as a child I learned a certain amount of 'cat' and still find I can communicate by times.
My neighbor Frisky, who is getting up there, even in cat years, is still my garden's chief pest control officer. At times when I'm out there I see Frisky very much on the prowl. I don't want him catching birds, but I'm very happy with his efforts for moles and mice. To date, my pea crop has been well protected.
As a reward to Frisky and other feline friends, I plant catnip. There is quite a bit of this around the edges of my garden after 22 years here.
