Is dawn dish washing soap acceptable for washing a dog?

  • If she is scratching, I recommend finding out the cause of the scratching before choosing a shampoo.

    Is she having an allergic reaction, fleas, hot spot, etc.?

    Once you know why she's scratching then you can get the shampoo best suited for that need.
  • We use no tear baby shampoo on his head then some the wife didn't care for after she bought it.
  • For an extremely dirty animal, dawn is great. For regular use, not so much. When we get a very dirty animal in for surgery and we need to get them clean beforehand, we often use dawn followed by surgical scrub.

    For a skin issue any medicated shampoo (probably oatmeal or salicylic acid) shampoo preferably animal should be OK.
  • I have yorkies and I use the best human shampoo and conditioner I can find for them. I would never consider putting any kind of dish soap on a dog. Dish soap is for removing oil and grease. Your dog needs some of its oils or its skin will dry out. Then it WILL itch and scratch. Have you taken the poor thing to the vet? if so, did you ask about using dish soap on your dog? I KNOW what the vets answer would be, and I suspect YOU know it too.
  • If your dog is scratching you probably don't want to wash with Dawn. It will only dry his skin out more. Get some dog shampoo.
    Or maybe some baby shampoo.
  • Do you have a Petco, Petsmart, Pet Store (even a small store), or as mentioned a grocery store? They should carry basic (low cost) dog shampoo and conditioners.

    I'm sure DOC will chime in, but I wouldn't recommend using human hair shampoo on a dog.

    Here is a google search using "is human shampoo good for dogs"; this is what the search showed;

  • Wash your own hair with it for a few weeks, and then decide if you want to use it on your dog.

    What do you mean it's all you have available? Are there no grocery stores in your area? They even sell dog shampoo at the gas station in my town.
  • They use it all the time on animals. I use Main & Tail and body shampoo which also works well for human hair as well. I would think Dawn would dry out the coat and skin and make the hair brittle if used very much. They use it to strip oil from rescued animals.
  • Yes, perfectly acceptable. The animal rehabilitation people use Dawn to clean distressed animals. I have used it before on my dogs with excellent results.
