Pets and Florida Heat

I tried searching for what I'm looking for but didn't have any luck. I think I'm just not searching the right terms as I'm sure I've seen this discussed before.... anyway, we are temporarily living full time in Florida. We have two dogs that are in the camper during the day while we are at work. I do get home at lunch time to take them for a walk. Our concern is what would happen if the electric/AC would go out? We know it gets hot quick! We have some good neighbors that would call us if they are home and know about it, but there could always be a chance nobody would be home. I thought I read about a vent fan that turns on when it gets to a certain temperature. That sounds like a great idea, but if the electric goes out how would that fan work? What do others do with their pets in situations like this?

Any suggestions appreciated!
  • Don't think a vent fan would do much good with all the windows closed.

    Check out doggy daycares.

Look at the "Fantastic" fans. But if you take that route you have to leave a window open for cross ventilation/heat dissipation while gone.
  • Thanks for the great advise! We've been hooked up to shore power for a bit and didn't think about fan running on 12v.

The cam idea is also a great idea that I will be looking into.

Any suggestions for make/model of a vent fan?
  • I use Alfred on my old Android devices. Not sure if all functionality works on Apple?

When the device is unplugged (loses power) I get an alert. It also allows me to watch/listen and talk through the monitoring device. I do recommend using a cellphone/tablet with built in flash. This allows night vision to work better. It can be set to detect and alert to motion. Works great on whatever spare smart devices are laying around. Uses your home wifi. If wifi is unpredictable or not available you could use Google Fi and the Nexus 5x still on sale.

I did connect a very old Motorola Droid X. When the camera focuses from the rising sun it sets a motion alert. The Samsung Galaxy S3 does not have this problem. You could setup a Bluetooth temperature alert device or place a thermometer within eyesight of the spare smartphone/tablet.

New Pay as you go phones can be bought for near $100 if you look around. You will want the monitoring smartphone to be connected to power. It will burn through battery power. The loss of power alert would be ineffective unless plugged in.

A couple of months ago someone posted on this forum some Bluetooth temp alert devices that connected to a spare smart device. I tried to convince the wife the dog needed her own active smartphone. Apparently that's excessive. I since discovered the Alfred app using existing tech around the house. I still wouldn't mind a Project Fi Nexus phone for the dog.

    Google Play Store Alfred
  • The Vent Fans in the ceiling run on 12V, so as long as your battery was decent it would still work. This is the option I went with also. I've tested it when I was in Florida and it helps a lot. It actually does take a bit though for the heat to build up as in it's not as fast as in a car. When the heat built up and the fan kicked on the temps stayed bearable.
  • We have a Nest Cam and a hotspot. We point the camera where it has a full view of any place in the RV where the pet may be. It transmits both sound and picture. We can therefore talk to the pet and hear her. We also put a thermometer where we can view the temp. We check the IPhone picture every so often.
  • We were Florida residents for 34 years, so we do have some idea of what you are referring to...having said that, if the power were to go out in your site built house, it would also heat up there pretty quick...granted, not as quickly as an RV. If you think this situation might actually occur, you could get a pet sitter or put your pet in a kennel while you are at work.
