Nope it was real electrical fencing. The darn dog would test it every morning to see if it was turned on - he was fine getting the jolt every day for the chance it would be turned off and he could open the door and take a run around town. Opening the door required getting jolted for several minutes so if it was turned on he'd just go take a nap. The electrical wire along the fence didn't deter him at all - he'd just take the jolt as he went over.
A smart dog is wonderful. A smart dog who thinks it's fun to outwit the humans - not so much.
