Purina dog food surprise

Don't worry, this is not another "blank is better than blank" dog food topic, just an observation. :B

After decades and decades of absence, I am now seeing Purina Dog Chow commercials on TV. Just kinda surprising to me, I thought it had gone by the wayside.

  • Pet food is such a huge market. In my home town or within 10 miles is a Purina, Hills Science Diet and an Iams plant. There is also a Blue Buffalo plant under construction. All of the plants are steady jobs with no layoffs.

There are significant advantages for a pet food company of Purina's size.
    ownership of the manufacturing facilities
    ownership of testing labs
    performing feeding trials
    huge clout with ingredient suppliers

These advantages can lead to better quality pet foods, if the company is pushed by consumers and competitors to provide the desired quality improvements

Brands like Party Animal Pet Food (pentobarbital recall) are at the mercy of the contract manufactures they hire and have very little clout with ingredient suppliers or are at thee mercy of the contract manufacturers if the manufacturer qualifies & secures the ingredients.

  • Years ago, when soaking purina to wean puppies, there was a lot of hair floating in the mix. Little stub pieces like you see from a man's razor. Seems the company considers that a source of protein. Was a long time ago, don't know if they still do that or not.

Almost always bugs in the food has to do with distributor warehouse or the store problems, not manufacturing. While the guy was probably right, it was a very poor answer and not proper customer service. Reminds me of United Airlines school of business.
