When you know their quality of life is not what it should be. It was time when our babies could no longer see or hear, you had to put their food dish in front of them and they had to be carried in and out for bathroom visits.
When we put our dog down just before Christmas, he had fallen down in the snow, couldn't get up on his own and just didn't recover well. By this point, he was almost completely deaf, losing his sight and couldn't go up and down steps on his own. And we knew that it was time to join all the others in puppy heaven.
It is never an easy decision, but you have to know in your heart when the time is right.
