Questionable Breeding

My only reason for wanting to know would be to be on the lookout for any predisposition to a health or behavior-related issue.

By educated guess I assume that would require someone who was qualified to judge dog breeds and was expert in the individual characteristics particular to certain breeds. Very few of us have access to that level of knowledge. I would expect the swag of a dna check has to be better than a wag. Pound puppies may be many generations removed from any purebred strain.

LOL. When you ask me "why" about anything related to DNA or genetics . . well, that's way over my head. Maybe BCSnob will comment.

I know when I look at a dog that looks almost purebred Lab, and I know his owner adopted him as a very young puppy from a shelter here in NC, and the DNA results for that dog indicate Lab, but also a couple of very rare breeds that I've never in my 51 years seen anywhere around here -- that the DNA results aren't likely to be accurate as far as those two very rare breeds are concerned. That's just one example, but I've heard many others that were similar.

I have heard that the tests are now a bit more accurate than they were a few years ago.

I know this breed (The Millie) since I have one, too.... a main trait is their long-sufferance of whatever we Human Persons fling their way. As an example, here's my "Millie" making the best of the fact that her water dish froze overnight on one of our recent trips.



Who wouldn't love such a plucky breed? :B
