We have a 2 yo mini aussie that will be camping with us. At home, we have a large yard and we have a radio fence. It works perfectly for us. She learned the boundaries in minutes like everything else. She is smart like her dad! She is very well trained and very social. However, she is not great on a leash but tolerates it when necessary. We rarely use one as she always stays at our side and heels on comand. I would always keep her on a leash when walking in a campground or off site. What about at our site? Can we use the radio fence when we are there? I believe I can plug it in and dial it in to a small radius.

Call the cg beforehand and ask. Different cgs have different rules.

A quick search on GOOGLE says "Most campgrounds do NOT accept the use of a wireless fence in place of the leash law or leash"I know there are wireless invisible fences available now but here again your dog would be seen running around your assigned campground area without a leash..Like said above call the CG and ask I guess...Roy Ken

I think that is what I will do. Any other options like overhead lines to attach the leash to that she won't tangle up.

We have 2 acres with a radio fence, the boundary wire is just that yellow bell wire, and in some places it's visible on the ground. Took the dog to nephew's soccer game 2 weeks ago, and they had that cheap yellow propylene rope strung up as guides for parking etc. As we walked toward the field, the dog dug in like a mule and refused to budge. Would go in any other direction besides towards the rope. I finally figured out that she associated the rope with teh boundary wire.My uncle used to camp with dogs, and he would just bring the training flags instead of the whole system, said the dog knew what they were and didn't go near them.That said, a leash is your best bet. We use a 20' cotton training lead tied to a tree or the RV steps, enough to let the dog wander around the campsite, but short enough to keep her in the campsite.

My problem with the radio fence is not how your dog does with it, but how another dog would NOT be deterred by it. It would seem to me to be an invitation for trouble if your dog encountered another loose dog who wouldn't have the same boundaries.

Have you considered an ex pen? It's a great way to keep your dog contained on your campsite and I can't imagine that anyone would complain as long as she isn't barking. If she isn't great on a leash, you might try using an Easy Walk or Sensible harness. The leash attaches at their chest so they can't build up momentum to pull on the leash and it doesn't choke them.

SD law makes no exception for a pet on an unattended 'run' . In public places It must be attended by a human at all times. 'leash ' is legally interpreted as in attended animal to human physical connection.
A run or virtual fence is not acceptible. Sorry.

Thanks for the valuable input everyone. I certainly don't want to violate any rules or make other campers uncomfortable. I am going to work on some sort of tethering system that I can use that will slide and hang from above to give her some freedom and keep her on a leash at the same time.

I understand that most Aussies can be contained with a piece of kite string laid out - then told not to cross it - BUT, as others have said, to the casual observer, your dog is loose.

My late Aussie and my late Cattle Dog were both awful when tied up, simply because they never were on ANY restraint in "regular life". So the best I could do was take them for nice long walks and wear them out, so they were content to just lay on the patio rug, tied, and watch the world go by....

Every state I know of has a leash law when in public sorroundings. Sorry, no other way is legal or safe for your family. Other posters gave very good reasons for the necessity.
Our 7 mo. old mini aussie is learning, and teaching our guests pets about leash and space.

Even with well trained dogs, I wouldn't trust mine off leash. There are too many new distractions, smells, animals, people, noises that perfection is an unreasonable expectation. I wouldn't trust someone's dog behind an electronic fence around a campground.

Typical Pet Rule at CGs

Animals must be kept on a leash at all times and may not be left unattended at campsite. Animals may not be tethered to utility fixtures, picnic tables, trees or fences. Animal waste must be picked up by the pet owner.

Exactly. My two oldest have had bad experiences with charging dogs and would freak out if they saw a loose dog at a CG. I'd be complaining to the management if I saw it. Sorry, you're a nice guy, but I don't know your dogs.
