It's not that rare and, honestly, there's nothing to see - it's a cat sitting on your lap. I love cats, but that doesn't mean I think every cat I see requires a reaction (I feel the same way about dogs, birds, etc.).
And it could have more to do with you than with your cat. Maybe you present a "don't bother me" presence, so folks just walk past without comment.
