Safe Cat enclosure?

hello all, new to posts. Researching possibility of taking my two cats rv'ing. Both are indoor cats that LOVE to lie on the patio and are good about staying in the yard. One will even gladly wear a lease to walk about but is very skid dish, I would NEVER let them roam free. I've seen screen rooms that you can attach to your awnings, how secure would this be to keep cats in? I don't want to consider taking them if I don't have a way for them to get outside safely and securely. thanks for any suggestions!

I would imagine so if that cat is almost always inside.

We take a couple camping and they absolutely love it outside. Probably not a great idea to say that on here.
  • Our experience: it's a very rare cat that camps outside without hysteria. They love their own territory where they feel safe and that's the interior of the rv. I don't know what kind of rv you have but if you gave us more info we can share possible set-ups.
  • Poster "amandasgramma" uses a screen-room, but as I recall only in the day-time and only if they are present.
I've seen people use enclosed metal cages, that the cats access via a window or "basement"
We simply never let the boyz out-side.
  • A scared cat can quickly go through a regular screen. Most people enclosures with screening would not be strong enough to hold up against sharp cat claws or another animal trying to get in at the cats.

The kittywalk linked to above looks nice, but I would be hesitant using them in an unprotected area, where, again, another animal could attempt to get at them.

A wire dog crate would be my first choice. You can get them in various sizes and they can be folded down for storage, etc. The crates are made to keep a dog in, so they would be strong enough to keep a dog out. You can even make/buy a shelf to go in the crate so the cat can sit higher, and you can put a kitty box in there also.

Some more benefits of the wire dog crate is that it can be hosed off and sanitized easily and it can be used inside if you need to confine the cats for some reason.
  • We only allowed our cat outside if he was on a leash and we were with him. He loved being outside with us.
    Would a dog cage work?
We had a screen room with our PU and Opie could crawl under the sides. I am assuming that they do not have floors but we had ours over ten years ago so they may be made differently now.
And Opie was on a longer leash when we were sitting out on our lot.
  • People use cages hung outside the rv windows...that is probably your safest bet. I think screen rooms can be secured but the ones I looked out seemed not very to start.

Another option would be a large wire dog crate that could sit on a table where they could see all around but be protected from loose dogs and such.
