You will bawl your eyes out, deal with it..... It is going to be hard. Even "just a dog" is tied up in mind and heart with memories of days....and beings....that have passed.
It certainly sounds like it is time, and these things depend so much on temperament sometimes. My old beagle was deaf, blind, and mellow when physical problems mounted and we had to let her go. My mom's much younger poodle mix was deaf, blind, and scared to death and it was just no good for him or anyone else.
Here is hoping for a smooth transition for him and you. Could the vet provide something to give at home to relax him when you bring him in?
