Sad when we have to make that decision, I have a 12+ year old 160 pound Black Lab Mastiff, A Mastador named "Snickers", He has been struggling lately with his hips. About a year ago he had a stroke and has made a 95% recovery, But as you say, his cataracts and loss of hearing makes him spook allot quicker, He has not bitten at any one yet, but he has that look like he is confused and lost when he slips and falls sometimes.
I slowly go to him and look for him to allow me to help. I dread the day I have to make that call,, but for a dog,, he has had a GOOD life.
