I'm glad it was easy for him, never easy for us. Somebody, (was it you, Deb?) said they came home and told the other dogs "Rover is ALL GONE", holding palms out in the classic "no more treats signal." I did that to Rosie when we came home without Poquita and she totally seemed to get it. Maybe they are also relieved that the one who was obviously in distress is no longer there? Thanks for sharing all your experiences. RIP Jack.
Yes, I had to do the "all gone" routine with Ike, when we put down our elder Aussie Nick - because Ike was frantically searching for him. All night long....
Bringing home the collar of the deceased has worked for me. When I showed Ike's empty collar to Jack and Jimmy - they both sniffed it - Jack walked off, and Jimmy just looked shell-shocked. Today, Jimmy and Ben sniffed Jack's collar, the ears dropped... but there's no sign of mourning from either. But things have drastically changed for the better for them - there's no more yelling, no dog-tension over food or space - plus now that I have 2 able-bodied dogs - they can go everywhere with me. A simple 5-minute trip to the grocery store was cumbersome for Jack - and if I took only the 2 younger dogs - Jack paced and whined. We didn't go for walks, because Jack was only good for 100 yards or so. They now have free run of the building here at work. Life hadn't exactly been fun for them, for a while.
