Veterinarians are taught to give your pets all the care that humans get for their illnesses. Whether this is best or if it is best in humans case is debatable. Quantity of life is the goal, not quality of life. You seem to be referring your "original" dog to the Pharaoh Dog of Egypt. They are rare, but still a few around. Many of the descendants are similar, which yours is, but there are differences. Vets, or people in any business really enjoy when a customer comes in looking for an argument. Simply stating your preferences should have taken care of the situation. If it didn't, then it was her problem.
