We got Barkley as a puppy. Wen we were at work, we kept him in a pen within the living room which is about 2-1/2 feet tall. Eventually we started coming home and finding he had jumped over the pen and would greet us at the door. We now use sections of that same pen to block off a section of the house as a peaceful sanctuary for the cats. He could easily jump over it, but has never tried. I think it's just enough of a reminder of what he's supposed to do that it works. We've been very lucky with him as far as temperament. He's a rescue from SC - appears to be a shepherd/chow/retriever mix, about 50 #.
Hope you can work through this and end up with a keeper.
