Teaching an old dog new tricks
BF and I recently rescued a dog. She is part pit and part traveling salesman from what I can tell. I'll post a pic and you all can give me your best guess. Also, I'm guessing she's around 5 years old....

Our dear departed beagle was a trash can raider. We tried just about everything--positive training, all sorts of aversion techniques, trash cans that were supposedly dog proof (ha!), etc. We finally realized there were only two solutions that would work--crate her or put the trash can away every single time we left the house.
We didn't want to crate her (she was otherwise an extremely trustworthy to the point of being perfect dog), so we trained ourselves to move the trash can into the downstairs bathroom and shut the door every time we left. Thankfully, we were easily "trained" and only forgot to do it two or three times in the seven year we had her.
