I remember when daughter's cocker spaniel pulled a box of See's candy off the counter and had himself a yumy snack. You always hear that chocolate is bad for dogs but that little sucker showed not the slightest hint of remorse or stomach problems. He must have been disappointed that he never had that luck again.
Chocolate is bad for dogs and fatal if consumed in huge amount.
It depends on the dog, the type of chocolate, etc.
I've known dogs who became deathly ill after a small amount. I've known other dogs (Bat-dog in particular) who have gotten into large amounts with no ill effects.
Baker's chocolate is the most deadly. Milk chocolate is the least.
While I would never purposely give my dogs chocolate, I don't freak out about it - I keep watch for ill effects if eaten and am prepared to get them to a vet if needed.
I did have a cat who ate a chocolate kiss daily. He was dying of leukemia so we let him enjoy his kiss for his last few days.
