Time to brag.....

In MD there are two sheepdog trials in our venue. We host one (hilly course) and there is one on the Eastern Shore (flat course). This year the two trials offered a high combined prize; a hand made crook would go to the dog with the highest overall score from the 4 runs (two runs at each farm).

Our dogs ran okay at our trial even though our minds were busy with running our trial. My two Open dogs (top class) had scores both days; Peg placed 4th both days and Nell was just out of the top 10 both days. Renee was in the top 10 one day with Bette while her other dogs (BJ and Tally) did not get scores (retired or DQ). My Peg was 2nd overall and Nell was 8th overall after our trial.

Last weekend we competed at the Eastern Shore trial. In the first run of Open (top class) Nell was 1st, Bette was 3rd, and Tally (one of Bette's daughters) was 6th. In the second run of Open Renee and I tied for 1st with Renee & Bette winning the run-off and Peg getting 2nd. Renee's BJ (one of Peg's daughters) was 5th, Nell (one of Peg's daughters) was 6th, and Tally was 7th.

For the overall Peg was 2nd and her daughter, Nell, was 1st by 1 point (out of 400 points). I am soooooo pleased to have won the overall with Nell, a dog I bred and trained.

My Eve (one of Bette's daughters) ran in the next class down from Open and placed 7th & 1st in her two runs. She was 2nd overall 8 points (out of 180 points) below of 1st overall.

  • Congratulations to you and Renee. You both work very hard with your dogs and it certainly showed at the recent shows. I know about the work that goes into having a winning animal - my horse Nicky won 3 blue ribbons for me last fall but she still is in training every week, though I don't plan on entering any shows this year. Here's wishing all the best to you and Renee and all your creatures, great and small.

  • Yes, it was much easier to focus on running our dogs when we were not also running the trial and setting sheep for the trial (bringing out from the pen and keeping each group of sheep at the top of the field for each run).
  • Nice going, Mark!!!! I'm going to assume the tacit message was that the second trial, because it was not on your property, enabled you to concentrate on the dogs a little better??
