Bill, you did the most loving, unselfish and respectful thing for Earl. Bless you both.
Sharing our lives with an animal is no different than sharing with a human. The feelings are the same. Our son and his family lost their 12 year old yellow lab just before Christmas. It was so hard on the children. They have been taught the cycle of life and the 3 year old says quite often how she is glad that their Trix no longer has to cry every day because she was in so much pain.
Bill, you did not betray Earl. You shared many wonderful times together I am sure. We lost our Cocker Spaniel at a very young age. We had to carry him out on a blanket and roll him off so he could do his business laying down. We agonized for days about the dreadful decision. Due to his condition with his spine and allergies he would have had to always stay in the house and could only eat rice. This was a dog that went everywhere. He had his car seat, life jacket for the canoe and boat and his own little tent for shade when at the lake. The vet said he would have fretted every time we left him, wondering what he had done wrong, that we were not taking him with us. Still, his photo can bring my hubby to tears.
Bless you and your wife for giving Earl a wonderful life and finally giving him dignity in death. Peace to your heart!
