So sorry for your loss. Second guessing is normal in these situations but your vet is right. If you had an animal with an injury or acute illness, sometimes you might hold out for that miracle and a very few people get one.
But until we master time travel or maybe some advanced medical approaches that we just haven't yet, the conditions you describe and the course of the deterioration are simply not reversible. Waiting would have meant more suffering, not less.
You did the right thing. It will be a rough weekend....do stay hydrated....and tell your friend, out loud, that you require a good haunting.
