When I put our Dobie down in 1999 I felt the same way as you about the quilt. Then in 2007 I put down our Levi and Australian Shepherd. A few months later I put down Old Fella our Lab mix rescue. The I had to put down our rescue Lab we had few only three months.
Now we are facing the time Our rescued Shepherd mix will be leaving us. She is fourteen years old. We rescued her four years ago and we have had her on medications for the last two years. We tried the new Stem Cell Therapy last May which bought her some extra time, but now she is fading fast. She can hardly move around and it takes four different kinds of medicines to keep her going.
What you have done for your pet is a kindness in that you ended their pain and suffering. Our pets know we love them and it is with that love that we lovingly send them on before us. I don't look forward to the next few weeks when we will have to send Mama to Rainbow Bridge, but it is with love that I do so. She knows she is loved and shows it everyday with her devotion to us.
This is all a part of pet ownership, it comes with the territory. Knowing what I do about all that is required of us as being responsible for our fur babies I will do it again and face the same decisions with heart felt sorrow, but with the assurance that this is done with love and kindness. We do for them what they cannot do for themselves.
